Robert Smithson - Map of Broken Glass (Atlantis)

On February 16th, 2024, I took a day trip to Beacon, NY. Part of my trip included a visit to "Dia Beacon", an art museum. Check out more from the museum here.

Smithson has a few works on display at this museum. While I did manage to take photos of "Leaning Mirror" and "Closed Mirror Square (Cayuga Salt Mine Project)", they didn't capture my interest as much as "Map of Broken Glass (Atlantis)" did.

While many other of Smithson's works feel like they just took a bunch of sand, gravel, salt, or other miscellaneous debris and tossed them on some glass, this piece feels so much more deliberate. While staring at this, you're surrounded by white and gray colors so a splash of blue really stands out. The fact that it's so incredibly close to you adds so much. The extra element of danger might add to the intrigue and whimsy. Still, while initially, it might seem like a bunch of glass swept up in a pile, something about it draws you to it.
