Larry Bell @ Dia Beacon
On February 16th, 2024, I took a day trip to Beacon, NY. Part of my trip included a visit to "Dia Beacon", an art museum. Check out more from this museum trip here.
One of the things I encountered shortly after Michael Heizer's "North, East, South, West" was Larry Bell's "Duo Nesting Boxes". Immediately I was reminded of lost spaces' "no-vacancy" because of the colors. I absolutely love this piece and I can't really explain why. It's just by itself alone in a room with plenty of open space. While it's incredibly well-lit and so welcoming, I didn't dare even approach the carpet that it sits on for fear that I would somehow ruin it by accidentally stepping on it. According to one of the guides at the museum, this was the first time that Bell was using color for the carpets in his work.
Here is a slightly earlier piece by Bell. While it's very similar to "Duo Nesting Boxes", "Standing Walls I" is much less welcoming. It's still a lovely piece and I just want to run around on that carpet.
